The ten largest of 126 projects by EU contribution:

FILBERT: An innovative implantable device and management platform to prevent chronic fluid congestion

€2.5M EU contribution · 1 partner · 2023-08 to 2025-07 · coordinated by Paragate Medical Ltd (IL)

Pathologic fluid overload is a main clinical complication of congestive heart failure (CHF). CHF is a severe chronic disease affecting ~28 M people worldwide. Around 8 M of CHF patients are resistant to oral medications and undergo frequent hospitalizations to remove extra fluids with aggressive acute treatments, all carrying severe complications. None of these treatments can prevent fluid accumulation.

Elonroad: On-the-go charging system for heavy electric vehicles in ports and other closed loop applications

€2.5M EU contribution · 1 partner · 2023-08 to 2025-07 · coordinated by Elonroad AB (SE)

Ports account for ~30% of CO2 emissions in the shipping industry, mostly caused by diesel-powered machinery. While regulators are pushing for industry electrification, charging infrastructure is lagging and creates major barriers for electrification. Elonroad’s electric road system can charge any heavy vehicle (in motion or parked). It enables much smaller batteries that allow OEMs to reduce vehicle costs.

OPERAS: Opioid-free Pain relief for Enhanced Recovery After Spine fixation surgery

€2.5M EU contribution · 1 partner · 2023-04 to 2026-03 · coordinated by Sentryx BV (NL)

There is a troubling lack of effective pain treatments after major surgery. Especially after musculoskeletal procedures, patients experience debilitating pain now treated with opioids. Opioids provide insufficient pain relief, have many toxic side-effects, and are highly addictive.

Cellularity: The critical shift to single-cell formats in functional analyses of living cells

€2.5M EU contribution · 1 partner · 2023-08 to 2025-07 · coordinated by SAMPLIX ApS (DK)

The incredible potential of cell and immune therapy (CIT) is limited by technical challenges related to the standard analysis of immune cells in bulk, which neglects their heterogeneity. Single-cell functional resolution is essential to understand the full potential of immune cells.

Electric Actuator: Electrification of heavy machinery

€2.5M EU contribution · 1 partner · 2023-08 to 2025-05 · coordinated by Excess Engineering AS (NO)

We have invented and developed a specific solution for one of the key components found within most of the worlds excavators, cranes, construction machinery. Excess Engineering have patented and tested a new revolutionary electric actuator that can replace all type of hydraulic systems. Electric systems available in the market today has never been able to replace hydraulic systems in construction machines.

hyplasma: A clean and cost competitive hydrogen production solution near the end user thanks to an innovative plasma methane pyrolysis technology

€2.5M EU contribution · 1 partner · 2023-12 to 2025-11 · coordinated by Plenesys (FR)

HyPlasma aims at bringing to the market an integrated solution for the production of affordable clean Hydrogen. The process is based on methane pyrolysis, which transforms natural gas (or biomethane) into clean Hydrogen on one hand, and solid carbon on the other hand: it therefore avoids CO2 emissions.

DiogenX: Beta-cell recovery to counter diabetes

€2.5M EU contribution · 1 partner · 2023-10 to 2025-09 · coordinated by Diogenx SAS (FR)

Globally 8,75M people with T1D rely only on insulin administration to manage the symptoms of their disease. The treatment is complex since it requires injecting insulin (2-4 times/day) and adhering to a restrictive lifestyle (e.g., following a strict diet) reducing patient QoL.

SemioMVC: Mosquito-specific phagostimulants and pheromones for environment-friendly mosquito vector control

€2.5M EU contribution · 1 partner · 2023-12 to 2026-05 · coordinated by Molecular Attraction AB (SE)

Each year, chemicals worth €8bn are used for Mosquito Vector Control (MVC). Still, mosquito-borne diseases constitute a major socio-economic burden. As insecticides start losing efficacy and toxic chemicals are being banned from use (in the west in particular), we are becoming increasingly defenceless.

MPRD: Innovative, minimally invasive Medical Prostatic Retraction Device for the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) Patients in the office settings.

€2.5M EU contribution · 1 partner · 2023-09 to 2025-08 · coordinated by Butterfly Medical Ltd (IL)

Butterfly Medical, a medical-device start-up, is developing a fast, simple, and minimally invasive alternative treatment to medication and surgery used for Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) treatment. Butterflys innovative device transfers the procedure from the operating room to the clinic, with the device being placed in 6 to 8 minutes, in doctors office, under local anaesthesia.

Project page on CORDIS

apyx: The first non-surgical repair for Pelvic Organ Prolapse

€2.5M EU contribution · 1 partner · 2023-10 to 2025-09 · coordinated by Escala Medical Ltd (IL)

Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) affects nearly 50% of women over 40 years old globally. 89% of the cases seek treatment for symptomatic early stage prolapse. Despite the high prevalence and the progression of POP over time, patients currently cannot be offered a repair solution until the condition worsens enough for surgical intervention.
