No amount of technical brilliance will overcome concerns that you can't actually build and commercialize this innovation.

If they used uncertain language like "appears," "seems," or "suggests" rather than definitive language: They weren't confident in their assessment because you didn't provide enough information for them to be sure. This means you were too vague. More specificity and evidence would help.

If they asked for "additional detail" on multiple topics: You wrote at too high a level throughout. They need to see that you've thought through details and complexities, not just painted a high-level vision.

If they questioned specific numbers or assumptions: They think you're being unrealistic, whether about technical performance, market sizing, adoption rates, or timelines. They want to see the methodology behind your numbers and more conservative assumptions.

If they mentioned competitors or existing solutions: They think you haven't differentiated yourself clearly enough from what already exists. This might mean you need clearer competitive positioning, or it might mean your innovation genuinely isn't differentiated enough.

I missed many of these implications in my first reading of my Seeds of Bravery feedback. I saw the explicit comments but didn't initially grasp the deeper concerns they signaled. What it means: Your content might have been okay, but your communication and organization weren't. Evaluators struggled to understand what you were saying or find the information they needed.

How to fix it: This is actually good news—you might not need to change much substance, just how you present it. Reorganize for clarity. Add clear section headings. Use diagrams. Put key information where evaluators expect to find it. Have outsiders read your revision and tell you where they got confused.

Pattern: Questioning of specific numbers, assumptions, or timelines

What it means: You were unrealistic in your projections. Evaluators didn't believe your optimistic scenarios.

How to fix it: Build more conservative models with explicit assumptions that evaluators can assess. Show your work. Provide ranges or scenarios rather than single point estimates. Demonstrate that you understand what could go wrong and have adjusted your projections accordingly.

When to Push Back vs. When to Accept Feedback

Here's a controversial truth: not all evaluator feedback is correct. Evaluators are human, they sometimes misunderstand things, and occasionally they're wrong about their assessments. So when should you push back against feedback versus accepting it?

Notice this is a four-month timeline. Meaningful improvement takes time, especially if you need to gather new evidence, add team members, or conduct customer development. Don't rush a resubmission just to make the next deadline if you haven't actually addressed the fatal flaws.

Some founders ask: should I resubmit to the same program or try a different one? It depends. If the feedback suggests your project is fundamentally misaligned with that program's priorities, try a different program. But if the feedback points to fixable weaknesses in how you presented a project that does fit the program, definitely resubmit once you've addressed the concerns.

For Seeds of Bravery, the feedback made clear that my project did fit the program—I'd just executed the application poorly. Resubmitting to the same program after addressing the feedback was the right move.

Rewriting vs. Rebuilding: Knowing the Difference

One critical question: Does your feedback require rewriting your application or rebuilding your approach to the project itself?

Rewriting is sufficient when:
